How to Find a Strobing Highlighter
Although most highlighters have an almost translucent appearance once applied to the skin, picking a formula with the right base color can be extremely important. If you have darker skin, try to find a deeper gold-based highlighter. A richer shade will blend well with your skin tone. Those with fairer skin should opt for a lighter gold-based formula. Many of these highlighters will appear almost yellow-toned in the packaging.
Products I Like/Have Used
Before I the importance of matching a shade to your skintone, I used to buy NARS Albatross. This shade is perfect for someone with a fairer skintone, but on me, it looked a bit ashy.
Now, I use Global Glow by MAC Cosmetics. It's a really good silver-sheened product that looks good on all skin tones. I don't like to go overboard when applying the product: I apply just enough to give me a healthy, dewy shine.
The next product I'm planning on buying is Champagne Pop by Becca Cosmetics. That shade is from the company's collaboration with YouTube beauty guru Jaclyn Hill (whom I ADORE). It's a perfect universal shade, and all the hottest Instagram and YouTube MUAs are using it lately (see below).
How and Where to Apply
1. Always start applying highlighter on the tops of your cheeks. Apply starting from the area of your cheekbone under your iris. Blend upward, pulling the product toward your hairline. This will give the appearance of a higher cheekbones and better bone structure. Be careful not to drag the highlighter downward! Dragging the product down toward the hollows of your cheeks will have the opposite effect: then, you're essentially highlighting the widest part of your face and making your face appear bigger. This is not ideal: especially for those of you with round faces like me.
2. Next, apply just a dab of highlighter to your cupid's bow to accentuate your lips and make them appear fuller.
3. Take a very thin brush and apply short strokes of highlighter on the bridge and tip of your nose.
4. Add a tiny bit on your forehead in the space slightly above the space in between your eyebrows. Blend upward.
5. Blend, blend, blend until your arm falls off. Be sure to move your brush in circular, upward motions. When you're done, you should see no streaks or harsh lines: just a healthy glow. You will probably feel like you're over-blending. You're not! Just keep going.
